Grand Haven Quick and Easy Council Vote Summaries

Community: City of Grand Haven
Population: 10,000+

The local media footprint is shrinking across the State. 24/7 news sources saturate our news feeds and overwhelm our citizens with national and world news. The space for local information is shrinking, and local engagement is suffering as a result. City Council meetings generally last for a few hours, and few people have time to commit to watching on line or coming to City Hall to check up on our local government.
City Council packets are full of worthwhile and important information, but they average over 200 pages for every meeting.
Following each meeting, Assistant City Manager Ashley Latsch prepares a summary of what happened and it is released before dawn on Tuesday; giving a quick, at-a-glance update on the actions the City Council took.
This is immensely popular and successful after only a few months. Quick and easy vote summaries are communicating with a broader, more diverse audience.

Replicability:

Anyone with graphics and writing skills can pay attention to the meeting and create a quick PDF using Canva or another info-graphic app. Then it gets posted, distributed and read throughout the community.

Creativity and Originality:

Staff was asked to provide brief summaries following the meeting; Assistant Manager Latsch took it to a beautiful level by making it an attractive info-graphic that is eye catching and goes down easy. We get dozens of positive comments following every meeting, thanking us for providing a snapshot on the day after the meeting.

Community Impact:

Most people having instant, graphic updates of what is going on at the local town hall. Builds trust and confidence and is easier to read than material from most other sources.
