Auburn Hills Amphitheater and Splash Pad

Community: City of Auburn Hills
Population: 10,000+

Auburn Hills is pleased to introduce its new performing arts amphitheater, plaza, and companion children’s splash pad as part of the transformation of its Riverside Park in Downtown Auburn Hills. One of the many functions of the amphitheater will be to present outdoor performances. Using the Clinton River as a backdrop, the main stage will be a spectacular setting for concerts, plays, and other arts and community events. The amphitheater space will also be available to rent for special events. The amphitheater, splash pad, and plaza space will enhance both the aesthetics and the recreational opportunities already available in our downtown. Also key to this transformation is the addition of public art in the form of a sculpture that was commissioned by a local artist. The official opening of this project is June 21, 2019.

Replicability:

Much of the design could be transplanted into any other local community space and the methods used for fundraising could easily be replicated within another community.

Creativity and Originality:

There are two key parts to this project. fundraising and design. In addition to the funds donated by residents and corporations to the Auburn Hills Community Foundation, funds were also contributed by the city’s Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA). We used the natural topography of the park, whereby tiered seating was built into the side of a hill for viewing of the performances in true amphitheater style. Located along the rail trail and Clinton River, connecting many communities, there is an opportunity to experience a concert without getting into a car and driving. This project helps add to walkability and the sense of community by connecting cities and neighborhoods, and improves the quality of life for all of our residents and visitors.

Community Impact:

This has been a transformational project for Riverside Park and our entire downtown. We are beginning to reap the rewards of significant investment, which will lead to a more thriving downtown business district and more signs of activity on our sidewalks and in our businesses. Perhaps more than anything, our downtown is becoming a gathering space for the community. This project enhances opportunities for the community to come together for recreation and the arts.
