Industrial Zone Redevelopment Through Strategic Medical Marihuana Ordinance

Community: City of Center Line, MI
Population: 2,500-9,999

We enacted and strictly enforcing a well designed ordinance allowing medical marihuana facilities only in the areas of our city zoned for industrial use. By doing this, we have completely filled these once languishing areas and reaped a tremendous amount of revenue, while shielding our residential and commercial areas from any negative impact.

Replicability:

The ordinance is available online and can be copied by other communities. The strategies involving its implementation are not costly.

Creativity and Originality:

By locating the medical marihuana facilities only in our industrial district, requiring several measures to ensure public safety in the ordinance, and strictly enforcing this ordinance and existing laws, we've been able to allow for many of these facilities while maintaining the character of our community.

Community Impact:

We currently have zero vacancies in our industrial zones and have received over $455,000 in revenue from applications, fees, and revenue sharing alone. Property values in those districts have increased by over 33%, also adding approximately $100,000 in additional tax revenue. All of this has been accomplished without any disturbance to the residential or commercial areas of our city.
